A Conversation With Somebody I Knew Growing Up But Never Really Talked To Until Now

ME: Really Minneapolis, it’s actually possible to get around you using only public transportation and a bicycle?
MPLS: Yeah, for the most part. My friends tell me I actually have a great trails system … and there’s my new light rail line.
ME: Man, that’s really cool … I never knew that about you.
MPLS (winking): I couldn’t help notice you checking out my parks, too.
ME: Heh …. yeah …

{ Minneapolis takes a sip from her martini }

ME: It’s funny, I’ve known you all these years but never actually seen Minnehaha Falls until just now.
MPLS: Well … it was always right there.

{ Pause }

MPLS: Pretty easy to get there by bike too. I don’t know how you missed it.

{ Long, akward pause as Minneapolis looks around the room }

ME: Hey, Minneapolis …
MPLS: Yeah?
ME: Well, you’re obviously a really interesting person, and …
ME: I guess … I’m just saying … I’m … I’m sorry I kind of ignored you in high school.

{ Minneapolis smiles }

MPLS: Hey, no problem, nobody’s perfect. Especially not in high school.
ME (smiling): Well thanks, I’m glad you understa—
MPLS: So, I see you’re still with Mendota Heights?
ME: Uh …
MPLS: How’s she doing?
ME: Yeah, uh … well you know ..
MPLS: Oh wait I’m sorry, are you not together?
ME: Well, y’know it’s complicated …

{ Another akward pause. Minneapolis looks down at her empty drink }

ME: So, how’s St. Paul doing?
